Arigato, Okinawa
When Chris said we were going to get to Okinawa and just lay and soak it all in, he really meant it. After traversing through so much of Japan's main island on foot, we were very ready for some R&R.
Like many of our fellow westerners, this actually posed to be kind of challenging for me. I was really hard to not have anything on our schedule and to actively force myself to relax. I found it was difficult for me to turn my mind off. I kept feeling like I needed to be doing more or taking advantage of this time in some way.
Chris is way better at this than I am. He's way less anxious than me (see Anxiety from Inside Out 2 lol), so it was nice to reflect with my travel buddy. And it didn't suck to do so in literal paradise. Okinawa reminds me a lot of Hawaii, having the beautiful, beach-side resorts with infinity pools facing the clear blue water, but all while still feeling isolated and immersed in nature. This particular resort has some amazing restaurants too, and we were so fortunate to try them and learn about more local cuisines. Although it is winter here in Okinawa, and we aren't partaking in the traditional beachside activities per se, every corner and direction we look at is so breathtakingly beautiful. No seriously, the sunsets took my breath away. I've shared some pictures but, as always, they don't come close to the actual beauty.
On a more self-care note, we did some deep-tissue massages yesterday that were definitely much needed. Normally my massages focus mainly on my tight, dentist shoulders, but this time it was also for my feet and legs after all the walking these past 2 weeks. It was rejuvenating and definitely much needed. My massage therapist ended the session suggesting that I take more deep breaths throughout the day while pushing my shoulders away from my ears, so we're going to work on that lol.
We also both had our first onsen experience. Something that was also challenging for me, but after a while in the natural hot spring (completely naked by the way), it was actually very freeing. I loved it.
All in all, this part of our trip, although much more quiet, was still very memorable and beautiful. I will admit I'm getting a little homesick. I miss my doggo and my bed. Though, I'm forever grateful for our amazing friend Memo for watching Walt and taking care of him. It lowers my shoulders juuust a little to know our dog is happy with his Buddies while we're away.
Currently we're packing up (we've gotten REALLY good at packing) for our early trek to Australia tomorrow! Eek! Carlitos, Jannik, and Coco here we come!! 🎾
